South Kerry Greenway Planning Update November 2019
The South Kerry Greenway oral hearings are currently underway, 12th November to 22nd November 2019. The South Kerry Greenway is a cycle path proposed to be built between Glenbeigh and Renard which is just outside Cahirciveen.
The first tranche of oral hearings were heard in September 2019 but were extended to allow further submissions. The proposed greenway is a route that predominantly follows the old decommissioned railway line which was closed in the 1960s. Agreement with all local landowners was not possible and the additional oral hearings have been provided to hear further submissions from affected landowners. The scheme affects 197 distinct landowners and approximately 222 holdings.
The budget for the 32km route project is currently 21 million euro to provide for land purchases, fencing, repairs to bridges, including a new bridge at Drung Hill tunnels, walkways, car parking and ancillary works.
The initial planning application was lodged by Kerry County Council with An Bord Pleanala in June 2018 and Kerry County Council lodged additional submissions in respect of environmental impacts in April 2019.
